Topic: Cancer Funds
Author: THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Date: October 13, 2012
This article focuses on the fact that 7 scientists have resigned in protest from Texas' embattled $3 billion cancer-fighting program, because the agency in charge of it is "charting a 'politically driven' path that puts commericial interest before science. The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas has awarded nearly $700 million in grants since 2009. Further criticism started when Phillip Sharp stated that the agency's decision have carried a "suspicion of favorism" in how the state is handing out taxpayer dollars. Brian Dynlacht, also warned that the agency was headed down a path of systemic abuses.
I decided to choose this article because it caught my attention how scientists refuse to work for an agency for cancer fighting because of grants monopoly. Seven scientists quit Texas Institute because of "favorism" in handing taxpayer dollars. These scientists can still continue to look for cure for cancer, and their resignation can lead to other scientists quitting. They serve as an example of honest scientists that resigns because of "systemic abuse" within the agency.
