Article 9
Topic: Clean Water Act
Author: Richard A. Lovett and Nature Magazine
Date: November 14, 2012
The author informs the reader about how The Clean Water Act focuses on nation's waterways being threatened by sea-level rise and ocean acidification. Since the passing of Clean Water Act of 1972, there have been mixed results. Dying lakes are in good health, rivers no longer burn, and species are getting off the endangered list. However, there are places in the United States where progress has slowed. Their goals of eliminating the problems for safe and swimmable water have accomplished, but the invasive species are causing harm to the environment, which is not covered by the Clean Water Act. In addition, other problems such as sea-level rise and ocean acidification arise. With this fact, a new legislation will be needed to protect U.S. waters. One way of attempting to deal with such pollution is to pipe storm water further out to sea before discharging it.
I decdied to pick this article because we have talked about environmental legislations and laws of the United States, including The Clean Water Act. It demonstrates the effect of our legislation on the environment. Despite all the regulations and laws we have there continues to be serious problems among other environments because one simple act does not necessarily cover all other issues. This is when the public needs to come in action because the environment it seems is the last thing that the government is concerned about, however if we convince the public to start a movement and start caring then this helps them see how much we want things to change for the better. Everyone could start by contributing in small ways for example; growing gardens or picking up their trash.
